Ask most people what holds back deep technology in Bharat and they will say money

Ask most people what holds back deep technology in Bharat and they will say money. For years that was true. It is not the binding constraint anymore. Capital has arrived, from the government's one lakh crore innovation fund down to a growing set of private investors who understand hard technology. The cheque is no longer the hard part.


The hard part is people. Specifically, people with depth.


Let me draw a distinction that matters enormously and gets blurred constantly. Bharat produces an extraordinary number of engineers every year, among the largest technical graduate pools on earth. That is breadth, and it is real. But deep technology does not run on breadth. It runs on depth, and depth is a different thing entirely. It is the person who has spent fifteen years on radio-frequency and antenna design and understands, in their hands, why a particular circuit behaves the way it does at millimetre wavelengths. It is the materials scientist who has watched a thousand samples fail and can look at the thousand-and-first and know why. It is the control-systems engineer, the photonics specialist, the person who has stayed with cryogenics long enough to have intuition about it.


You cannot produce that person in a bootcamp. You cannot hire your way to that intuition on a six-month timeline. Depth is grown, slowly, inside institutions patient enough to let someone stay on one hard problem long enough to truly own it. And that is exactly the thing our system, optimised for volume and for quick employability, has historically produced too little of.


I want to be careful here, because this is easily mistaken for a complaint about Indian engineering education, and it is not. Our institutes have produced brilliant people for decades. The issue is not quality; it is the incentive structure that pulls our best minds toward breadth and away from depth. For thirty years, the rational choice for a talented engineer was to go where the deep problems were being worked on, and those were mostly abroad. So the depth accumulated elsewhere, in other countries' labs and companies, built partly by our own people.


The encouraging news is that the conditions producing depth are finally being built here, deliberately, and I want to give credit where it is due rather than only diagnose a problem.


Start with specialised education at the frontier. Our premier engineering institutes are increasingly building genuine research depth, not just teaching capacity, in exactly the strategic domains the country needs. Research funding is following, and just as importantly, so is support for commercialisation, the bridge that lets a researcher turn a deep insight into a company rather than a paper that sits unread. That bridge matters more than people realise. Depth that stays locked in academia never becomes capability.


Then there are the incubation centres now spread across the country, attached to institutes and increasingly to industry. These matter because depth needs a habitat. A specialist coming back from abroad, or emerging from a doctoral programme, needs somewhere to land that has the equipment, the peers, and the patience to let hard work mature. Incubation centres, when they are run well, provide precisely that, a protected space where a deep problem can be worked on for years without the immediate pressure to show revenue.


And underneath all of it is the return of the specialists themselves. Every senior person who spent fifteen years on a hard problem abroad and now comes home brings something no training programme can manufacture: accumulated intuition, and the ability to transmit it. One returning expert does not just fill one seat. They seed a team. They train the next five people, who train the next twenty. Depth is contagious once it has a carrier, and we are finally getting the carriers.


This shapes how we build at Vardhan Dynamics, directly. We do not assume that a complete, credentialed founding team will walk through the door, because for deep technology it usually will not. The person with the critical depth is often a specialist, not a natural entrepreneur, and asking them to also be a complete founder is how good technology dies. So we build teams around scarce depth rather than waiting for depth to arrive fully packaged. We find the person who genuinely understands the hard thing, and we assemble around them the commercial, operational, and financial capability they lack. That is the only model that works when the binding constraint is depth rather than money.


The country that wins deep technology will be the one that grows and keeps its specialists, not the one with the most capital or the most graduates. Bharat is, at last, building the conditions for that. The talent is coming home. Our job, and the job of everyone serious about this, is to give depth somewhere to land and something worth staying for.
